Ghost Mannequin vs. Model Photography: Which Does Your Apparel Brand Need?
This comes up in nearly every first conversation with an apparel client, and the honest answer is: it depends on where you sell and what you're trying to signal.
Ghost mannequin: the workhorse
Ghost mannequin (or "invisible model") photography shows the garment's true shape and drape without a model, using a mannequin form that's edited out in post. It's faster and more affordable to produce at scale, which makes it the default for marketplace listings (Amazon, Daraz), wholesale catalogs, and any brand with a large SKU count that needs consistent, fast turnaround.
Model photography: the premium signal
On-model shots communicate fit, movement and lifestyle context in a way ghost mannequin simply can't. For brands competing on premium positioning — or anywhere the buying decision hinges on "how will this look on me" rather than just "what does this look like" — model photography earns its higher cost and longer timeline.
Our honest recommendation by scenario
- Large catalog, marketplace-first: ghost mannequin, consistently, across the full range
- Hero/flagship pieces within a larger catalog: model shots for the 10-20% that drive the most traffic, ghost mannequin for the rest
- Premium or fashion-forward brand: model photography as the default, with ghost mannequin reserved for basics or restocks
Many of our apparel clients actually use both — ghost mannequin for full-catalog consistency, model shots for the pieces they're actively pushing in campaigns. It's not an either/or decision as much as it looks at first glance.
