How to Choose a Product Photographer in Karachi (Without Wasting Your Budget)

How to Choose a Product Photographer in Karachi (Without Wasting Your Budget)

Karachi has no shortage of people offering "product photography" — the range runs from a phone-camera side hustle to full studios with lighting rigs and dedicated editors. The price difference between those two ends can be 5-10x, and the output difference is usually bigger than the price difference. Here's how to actually tell them apart before you pay for a shoot.

1. Ask to see unedited work, not just the portfolio

Every portfolio is curated. A studio's best 20 images tell you their ceiling, not their floor. Ask what a typical, non-hero product looks like straight out of the shoot — this tells you how much of the "wow" is lighting and skill versus how much is heavy retouching covering for a weak base shot.

2. Check if they understand your specific category

Jewelry photography and food photography are almost entirely different disciplines — different lighting, different lenses, different retouching skills. A generalist can do both adequately; a specialist does one exceptionally. If your product is jewelry, cosmetics, or something with reflective or translucent surfaces, ask specifically for work in that category, not just "product photography" broadly.

3. Clarify what's actually included

"Photography" can mean just the shoot, or it can mean shoot + editing + color correction + background removal + multiple formats delivered. Get this in writing before you book. The number that sounds cheapest is often cheapest because it excludes editing — which is where most of the value actually lives.

4. Ask about turnaround, not just price

A studio quoting an unusually fast turnaround (same-day for a large catalog, for instance) is often batching your shoot into a high-volume, low-attention pipeline. Reasonable turnaround for a proper shoot with real editing is typically 3-7 business days depending on volume.

5. Look for evidence of actual client relationships

One-off portfolio pieces are easy to produce as demos. Repeat, multi-year client relationships are much harder to fake and are the strongest signal that the work actually performs for the brands buying it — not just that it looks good in isolation.
